It has been conducted regularly since 1992. It had been organized as the European Cup since 1955-56. The prize is called the European Cup and it is regarded as the most prestigious club trophy in football. 16 surviving teams from the three knockout qualifying rounds join 16 seeded teams in a group stage. 8 group winners and 8 runners-up enter the final knockout rounds. 12 clubs have won the cup more than once. Real Madrid is the record holder with nine wins. The winner qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup.
